New Yachts:

JGA Yachting Inc. is an evolution of experience in yacht sales where my expertise developed in the mono-hull sailing market and transitioned to catamarans via a move to The Catamaran Company in 1996. I have had sales experience in, now, both power and sail, mono-hull and multi-hull as well as these products as applied to both the private yacht industry as well as commercial via the bareboat/crewed yacht charter business sector.

It is hard to believe but I find myself looking back and realizing that I have been involved with The Catamaran Group for pushing ten years at this point. In that period of time, I would have to say that I have watched the sailing catamaran evolve from primarily a platform for the charter industry to having mainstreamed as an alternative yacht for the private marketplace.

Pertinent History:

I will not dwell on the history dating back to antiquity, but that relevant history that has created the catamaran market that we see today.

Prior to the late 80’s , the catamaran was a “culty” group of sailors who were interested in going fast, along with a long standing group of British boat builders who were enthusiastic relative to the cruising merits of two hull yacht design. Both groups existed on the fringe of the yachting community, outside of Hobie Alter and the Hobie Cats. During the 80’s the French released a very lucrative tax shelter where a French citizen could purchase a yacht take huge financial tax benefit as long as the yacht met a certain criteria over the next 5 years. That yacht needed to be placed in a charter fleet in a French territory for that 5 year period to take the tax benefits from the shelter.

Given this shelter, let’s call the French yachting industry envisioned, companies like Fountaine Pajot, Jeantot (Privilege) and Lagoon proceeded to develop and design catamarans for the French fleets primarily for the French islands in the Caribbean. That’s what started current history relative to the Catamaran Market. Once these vessels began to proliferate the Caribbean, charter customers from North America and the rest of Europe began to see these “creatures” sailing the Caribbean Sea and soon realized what a wonderful platform the Cat made for chartering. From these beginnings, charter customers saw the Cat as a great potential as an alternative to a mono-hull for private ownership. The benefits of flat sailing, shoal draft and the space provided in the main saloons and cockpit intrigued the yachting community. As these vessels began to phase out via the 5 year obligation to charter and probably fueled by a weak Euro at that time used purchases were made and the Cats came to America.

In 1998, Lagoon supported by now, Beneteau, released the Lagoon 410 and 470 soon to be followed by an owners version where one hull was dedicated to the owner, this, along with private cruisers interest in galley-ups and bulkhead mounted wheels set up the trend which has now brought the Catamaran into the mainstream of the sailing yacht community.

From my standpoint and association with The Catamaran Group , there are three builders which I can happily say I have been involved with in the development and construction of some of the best Cats on the globe. The following builders via Alliaura, also known as Privilege, Lagoon and Sunreef are identified in the overviews noted below. Whether you are considering private purchase or for a charter application either bareboat or crewed please contact to discuss your parameters.

The Privilege 745 debuts at the Cannes, Genoa and Barcelona Boat Shows this fall.

ALLIAURA MARINE (Privilege) I have been involved with this company probably longer than with any one builder in my yacht sales experience and that’s a number of them. It is always with great pleasure to discuss, plan and see built one of these yachts for a number of reasons. First, Les Sables D’Olonne France is a great yachting West Coast Sea Port to get things started. Secondly, the staff are wonderful people from design through the craftsmen in the plant there is a warmth, understanding of the sea and a confidence that you are dealing with some of the absolute best builders in their field. Finally, the product is superb. These vessels are built in glass via a “stick” construction technique allowing the use of some of the finest materials in the world. www.alliaura.com The range from 39’ to 75’ in sail along with a 48’ Power Cat offers opportunities for a yachtsmen to sail local coastal waters to around the world in safety and fashion. We can further sit down and discuss charter applications in that this builder and these yachts have and still do provide the finest yachts in the world for either bareboat and or crewed yacht luxury charters. I have been involved in the construction of most models over the past years and would enjoy the opportunity to discuss the merits of a Privileged purchase.

LAGOON With the support of Beneteau, is without a question the largest Catamaran builder in the world today. Happily I can say that The Catamaran Group is the largest dealer of Lagoon’s in the world today!! That has been no small effort over the past few years. Lagoon has been the leader in design as well a production using (2) separate facilities one in St. Giles along with Beneteau and the other in Bordeaux via CNB a yard with an outstanding reputation providing private and commercial mon-hulls and multi-hulls to the marine community for many years. Coming from a manufacturing background it is ALWAYS with great excitement anticipating a visit to CNB and review what is on the floor at the moment. This can be from a large passenger vessel to 100’ plus mono-hulls and or multi-hulls. Lagoon

The range has a tremendous amount of depth with 38’ to 44’ being built out of St. Giles and the balance out of Bordeaux, size? You tell us, either aluminum, or composites. Of note is the NEW Lagoon 420 where Lagoon’s commitment to the Electric Hybrid has been realized as standard in this new and innovative model. Power Cats? The Lagoon 44 with her extended Fly Bridge makes motor boating realistic in a market where the cost of fuel has become exorbitant.
